About Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro
The Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro, acclaimed to be one among the most vibrant Clubs in the District, was chartered in 2001. It is the only 100% PHF Club in the District, and is known for its high-quality members, having varied classifications, consisting of former DG Police, IG Police, senior diplomats, Defence Personnel, Doctors, Lawyers, Bankers, Chartered Accountants and Professors. The Club is popular for its great fellowship and comradery among the members. Ever since its inception, the Club bags the best club and several other awards in the district, almost every year.
The Charter President of the Club, PDG (Late) Brigadier Narayan Nayak and his spouse Mrs. Sunanda Nayak are the only members of Arch C. Klumph Society (AKS), from this part of the country. Besides, the Club has several members of Paul Harris Society and Benefactors, who have contributed generously to TRF.
In the past 24 years of its purposeful existence, Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro has executed many projects. A couple of examples would suffice, to indicate the potential of the Club:
First, in a adopted village named Paikrapur some 12 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, with a happy school project, WINS project, toilet projects, besides health, eye and dental camps, Cataract Operations, etc. A RCC was started at Paikrapur.
Then in the next adopted village, named Seulakunda, located at about 20 miles from Bhubaneswar, for the past eight years, the Club has been implementing a holistic project, covering all seven focus areas, identified by RI. The highlight of this project is, all the projects are implemented, with local community as equal partners in executing them. A RCC was also started in Seulakunda.
Implementing WINS project by the Club in 2016-17 was a success story, which is documented in the April 2017 issue of Rotary News. Details can be found in: A fauji Club does fauji execution of WINS – ROTARY NEWS.
Currently, the Club is led by a lady President, Rtn. Sanjukta Nayak, under whose able leadership, the Club has already completed more than 120 activities so far, in this Rotary Year.

THEE TRUST, started on the 18th May, 2015, as a public charitable trust committed to contribute for the common good of the low-income citizens in the community in the health sector.
Its primary objective is to contribute in the areas of disability prevention, holistic rehabilitation, disability management, nursing and, palliative care and geriatric care of patients largely with leprosy, diabetes foot, congenital and poliomyelitis affected patients including trauma related physical inabilities.
The Pipili Health Institute (PHI) was established under THEE Trust, by Dr. Abhishek Kumar Sanyal, a specialist in Orthopedics and palliative care Medicine and Rehabilitation, trained in one of the world class premier health care institutions of India, namely, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and his wife, Dr. Ashima Sarkhel, with specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
They are ably assisted by a dedicated team of doctors, rehabilitation assistants, nursing and other staff. The hospital functions outside a small town, named Pipili, which is about 12 miles (20 kms) away from Bhubaneswar, the State capital of Odisha.
In a short while, they achieved an excellent reputation as an Orthopaedic hospital, and news of their reputation spread more by word of mouth than anything else. Their patients soon started to come from outside the state of Odisha, while their patients from Missionaries of Charity (Mother Theresa’s Home) at the village of Jalna, continued along with patients rejected by hospitals within Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
Project Details
Treatment of Persons with Disability (PWD):
Providing treatment and rehabilitation to persons with disability (PWD) is a major focus functional area of PHI.
Most of those who are PWD, come to this hospital are suffering from acute disability conditions of varied nature. Besides, in the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of PWDs visiting PHI and with more complexities involved, such as spinal cord injury, diabetic foot and leprosy cases from Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Centre, in Jalna, Khorda and other hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Complications arising out of certain kinds of disabilities include neurological as well as urological interventions.
Such cases require a highly specialised state-of-the-art treatment which cannot be treated with routine medical care services run by the government agencies in the rural sector for patients who cannot afford treatment in private hospitals.
Need for specialised state-of-the-art treatment:
Providing specialised treatment requires state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities to support not only the diagnosis, but also treatment and follow-up rehabilitation. Infrastructural facilities needed are advanced equipment for testing, diagnosis and treatment, to establish a state-of-the-art Laboratory for Rehabilitation.
A Rehabilitation Laboratory is a platform where the PWDs will undergo specialised testing for their various health conditions. These tests will be in addition to the routine tests like biochemistry, histopathology. This laboratory will focus on many aliments / disabilities by pressure sensing, posture-graph, neurogenic bladder assessment etc.,
Rehabilitation laboratory will reduce the duration of treatment and other rehabilitation measures while enhancing the accuracy of the treatment.
Why is a Global Grant Needed?
Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus - Humanitarian projects. By working together to respond to real community needs, clubs and districts strengthen their global partnerships.
Majority of the PWDs belong to the lower socio-economic status, which is proven by the documents provided to them by the State Government and the local administration. While the advanced treatment requires high-cost, the PWDs and the families that they belong to cannot afford an expensive treatment and rehabilitation. PHI provides advanced treatment with very less cost, or very often at no cost.
PHI receives a large number of patients, as the word spreads about the high quality of treatment and rehabilitation provided by the hospital. It draws patients not only from nearby areas, and from other parts of Odisha, but also from other states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. With the number of PWDs increasing, the hospital is constrained by infrastructural bottlenecks, as it is not possible to scale-up the treatment with the existing facilities.
PWDs not only suffer physically, with very poor quality of life, the disability prevents them from earning a livelihood. With proper treatment provided, the patients can lead a better quality of life and can support their families by earning income.
A highly qualified doctor, Dr. Sanyal preferred to establish the hospital in a rural sector of a small town and to cater to the requirement of under-privileged patients, with a quality on par with that provided in other private corporate hospitals. The intention of Dr. Sanyal and his team is to take the best and advanced health care to the poor patients, especially those with disabilities.
A team of Rotarians from Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro, has been visiting PHI more often and the team has witnessed how people come with very severe disabilities and is convinced about the need for infrastructural support for PHI, in terms of establishment of a state-of-the-art Laboratory for Rehabilitation, which it deserves, as such facility is meant to serve a large section of poor in the society.
